If the user has no documentation or help text to tell him what to expect of a system, he might as well not have the system at all. Until an IT system has been documented and explained, it does not exist in the real world. If you sit in an ivory tower, or an air-conditioned open-plan office, and create exquisite object-oriented software with multiple threads and hyper-accurate floating-point calculations, and all the latest technical gizmos you are completely wasting your time and your organization's money unless you also document and explain what you are producing.
